Transport workers go on strike in Bolivian capital

Bolivie - Societe
Bolivian transport workers went on strike Tuesday to demand higher fare rise, paralyzing the transportation services in the capital.
Members of the city's May 1st Departmental Federation of Public Transit Workers blocked major avenues, accusing the fare hikes proposed by the local government of being too little. They were also against Mayor Luis Revilla's proposal to ban minibuses from the city's downtown area two days a week.

In the protest, which union leaders said was backed by a total of 92 local unions, 46 taxi companies and 24 transportation organizations, the drivers surrounded City Hall and hurled bottles and homemade explosives at the building, forcing security guards to run for cover.

Revilla said he is willing to negotiate with the drivers, but asked them to first submit their proposals as the basis for negotiations.

"I'm sorry to see the drivers attacking, when we have asked them to respect the private properties," said Revilla, apologizing to citizens for the absence of transportation services.

Revilla said the city will organize a referendum on the fare hikes in two weeks, with new fares expected to go into effect on Feb. 18.
