Obama congratulates Sharif on winning Pakistan's elections

Pakistan - Culture
U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday spoke by phone with Nawaz Sharif, President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), to congratulate him on his party's success in the May 11 Parliamentary elections.
"The President also thanked Mr. Sharif for his role in the historic transfer of power between civilian governments, a significant milestone in Pakistan's democracy," the White House said in a statement.

Obama also "praised the extraordinary voter turnout and courage that Pakistanis displayed in the face of intimidation by violent extremists," it said.

"The two leaders agreed to continue to work together to strengthen U.S.-Pakistan relations and advance our shared interest of a stable, secure, and prosperous Pakistan and region," the statement added.

Two-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is set to lead Pakistan again after unofficial results showed that his PML-N party has a significant lead over its rivals in the May 11 general elections and enjoys a comfortable majority to form government.
