Togo - 500 billion CFA corruption allegations : CPJ joins ASVITTO on the call for safety of journalist Ferdinand Ayité

Togo - Societe
After revealing a diversion of around 500 billion FCFA by a family in the order for oil in Togo, the journalist Ferdinand Ayité, declares to be threatened Tuesday by an unknown person through a phone call. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), as well as ASVITTO (The Association of Victims of Torture in Togo) hearing of the situation, urge the Togolese government to protect the journalist at risk.

The Association of Victims of Torture in Togo (ASVITTO) quickly made a public commitment on the 22nd July about the situation, by inviting "the Public Prosecutor and the Minister of Security to ensure the safety of journalist Ferdinand Ayité in order to allow him to exercise freely. "

The Association also suspects a change made with the appointment of another personality belonging to the same network at "the head of the incriminated committee," following the first information provided by this journalist.

“ This succession of events, far from being a coincidence, is part of an absurd and irrational logic of an attempt to cover the tracks in order to prevent the manifestation of the truth,” warned the human rights society.

At the same time, ASVITTO invites Togo's main economic partners to observe this matter in order to get the government authorities to face their obligations and "truly fight against corruption and impunity” in the country.

Likewise, The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says it is" concerned that Ferdinand Ayité, editor of L'Alternative newspaper, on July 21 received an intimidating phone call, pressuring him to stop reporting allegations of corruption related to oil prices ”in Togo.

"Togolese authorities should ensure Ayité's safety." Twittered the NGO on Wednesday.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is a non-governmental organization that aims to "defend the right of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal" and promote freedom of expression. CPJ's headquarters are in New York, United States.

We should note that, M. Fabrice Adjakly, who was accused of corruption by colleague Ayité, lodged a complaint against the latter. Their legal battle will begin on August 12 at the Lomé Court of First Instance.
